What is Fixed Deposit Calculator?

A Fixed Deposit (FD) is an investment offered by banks and other eligible financial institutions where you deposit a lump-sum amount for a fixed tenure and earn interest at a predetermined rate. An FD calculator is an online tool that estimates the maturity amount and interest earned on a fixed deposit based on the deposit amount, tenure, interest rate, and compounding frequency. How Does The FD Calculator Work?

A Fixed Deposit calculator helps you calculate returns on a Fixed Deposit by estimating the maturity amount based on the investment amount, applicable interest rate, investment tenure, and the method of interest calculation. A Fixed Deposit interest calculator estimates your returns based on whether your FD earns simple interest or compound interest.

Simple Interest Fixed Deposit

For FDs that earn simple interest, the maturity amount is calculated using the following formula:

M = P + {(P x R x T) ÷ 100}

Where

  • M = Maturity amount
  • P = Principal (initial deposit)
  • R = Annual interest rate
  • T = Investment tenure (in years)

Example

Suppose you invest Rs. 2,50,000 in an FD for 4 years at an annual interest rate of 7.5%

  • M =  2,50,000 + {(2,50,000 x 7.5 x 4)÷ 100}
  • M =  Rs. 3,25,000

Compound Interest Fixed Deposit

For FDs with compound interest, the interest earned is added to the principal at regular intervals:

M= P + P {(1 + i/100) ^ t – 1}

Where

  • M = Maturity amount
  • P = Principal amount
  • i = Interest rate per compounding period
  • t = No. of compounding periods

Example

Suppose you invest Rs. 1,50,000 for 6 years at an annual interest rate of 8%, with annual compounding.

  • M =   1,50,000 + 1,50,000 {(1 + 8/100) ^ 6 - 1}
  • M =  Rs. 2,38,014 (approx)

These examples show how a Fixed Deposit rates calculator estimates the maturity amount using simple or compound interest, depending on the type of FD.

Factors That Affect FD Returns

Deposit Amount

Deposit Amount

Higher investment amounts generally earn higher interest in absolute terms, resulting in a larger maturity amount

Interest Rate

Interest Rate

Even a small difference in the interest rate can significantly impact the total returns, especially for longer investment tenures

Investment Tenure

Investment Tenure

Longer tenures allow interest to compound for a greater period, which can increase the overall returns

Compounding Frequency

Compounding Frequency

Quarterly, monthly, half-yearly, or annual compounding affects how frequently interest is added to the principal

Type of Fixed Deposit

Type of Fixed Deposit

Regular, tax-saving, cumulative, non-cumulative fixed deposits, and others may offer different interest payout structures

Premature Withdrawal

Closing an FD before maturity may attract penalties or a lower interest rate
